Maalik Wayns isn’t going to let Villanova’s season end quietly.
The junior guard has his third straight strong game since returning from a knee injury, scoring 28 points as the Wildcats beat Rutgers 70-49 on Tuesday night in the first round of the Big East tournament.
We had some great practices. If we keep playing the way we’re playing and defending, everything takes care of itself.”
Maalik Wayns.”
The Wildcats had lost their first game in the last two Big East tournament.
“This is probably the easiest Big East tournament I’ve played in since I’ve been here,” Wayns said. Freshman Eli Carter had 23 points for the 11th-seeded Scarlet Knights (14-18), who lost 77-71 to Villanova on Feb. 28.
“Obviously, it’s very hard to win a basketball game only scoring three field goals in the second half,” Rutgers coach Mike Rice said. Wayns, who was 13 of 14 from the free throw line, scored eight points over the final 4:13.
The Wildcats outscored Rutgers 40-15 in the second half, holding the Scarlet Knights to 3-of-25 shooting from the field. Rutgers was 16 of 55 for the game (29.1 percent).
Villanova shot 45.8 percent (22 of 48) and finished with a 43-29 rebound advantage, with Mouphtaou Yarou grabbing 12 to go with 13 points.

Big East Tournament
Theodore put on an impressive show of sweet passes and Seton Hall routed Providence 79-47 in the first round of the Big East tournament Tuesday night, a crucial victory for the Pirates’ postseason hopes.
“We’ve been a very good basketball team all year long for two reasons: Jordan Theodore and Herb Pope,” Pirates coach Kevin Willard said. LaDontae Henton had 14 points to lead the 15th-seeded Friars (15-17), who lost 15 of their final 19 games.
Providence has dropped four straight Big East tournament games and nine of 10 since 2003. Unable to solve Seton Hall’s zone, the Friars shot a miserable 27 percent from the field (15 for 56), including 19 percent from 3-point range (4 of 21).
Theodore, selected second-team all-conference, finished one assist shy of the Big East tournament record and committed only one turnover. Playing with style and flair, he dominated Vincent Council in their matchup of standout point guards.
Council, who was third-team all-Big East, finished with seven points on 2-of-13 shooting. The only time Seton Hall enjoyed a bigger blowout in the Big East tournament was a 103-70 victory over Syracuse in the 1993 championship game.
